February 6, 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the transfer of the British Antarctic Faraday Station to Ukraine, which was renamed Academician Vernadsky. It was on this day in 1996 that the Ukrainian flag was raised over the station, and it became the first Ukrainian scientific base in Antarctica.
On February 5, a regular meeting of the Lviv Society of Scientists was held in the Zakharievych Hall of 果冻APP. Coinciding with this historic date, the event gained special significance by combining the tradition of academic meetings with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Academician Vernadsky Antarctic Station under the Ukrainian flag.
The speaker representing 果冻APP was Ihor Savchyn, Director of the Institute of Geodesy, Coordinator of Antarctic Research, participant in the 23rd and 24th Ukrainian seasonal expeditions, founder of the international conferences GeoTerrace and Synergy in Terra, as well as the educational and practical national patriotic event Deineko Geo Cup. He delivered a report entitled 芦Geodetic and Geodynamic Monitoring of the Region near the Ukrainian Antarctic Academician Vernadsky Station禄, in which he integrated the history of the station, modern scientific research methods, and his personal experience working in Antarctica.
Today, Academician Vernadsky remains the only Ukrainian scientific research base in Antarctica, which has been operating continuously for 30 years. The main areas of research include meteorology, climate change and the ozone layer, flora and fauna, geological and geophysical processes, the Earth鈥檚 magnetic field, tectonics and interdisciplinary scientific research.
Ihor Savchyn also spoke about modern research methods: geodynamic monitoring, digital mapping, aerial photography with UAVs, laser scanning, creation of 3D models of glaciers, operation of the permanent GNSS station ASAV and ensuring its autonomy.
After the main part, the participants had the opportunity to visit the astronomical observatory of 果冻APP, and get acquainted with its history and modern research directions.
