As part of the 30th International Review-Competition of Diploma Projects in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design, An open lecture by Professor Philip Moizer on Mass Housing Construction in Ukraine was held in the main building of 果冻APP on October 6, 2025.
The event was moderated by Professor Bohdan Cherkes, who welcomed the participants and introduced the guest 鈥 Professor Philip Moizer, an experienced practicing architect, a researcher of mass housing construction in the post-Soviet space, and a renowned publisher of professional literature in the field of architecture and urban planning in Germany, DOM publishers.
In his lecture, Professor Moizer presented typical examples of mass housing construction in Ukraine and demonstrated possible approaches to the reconstruction of war-damaged buildings. Drawing on his professional experience, he shared cases from his own practice, including projects in Kryvyi Rih, where he dealt with partially destroyed buildings that required specific reconstruction methods. Overall, Professor Moizer emphasized that each case of destruction is unique and therefore demands individual, rapid and context-sensitive solutions, which are difficult to standardize or unify, especially under the conditions of an ongoing war.
The lecture sparked a lively discussion that highlighted the importance of engaging students in diploma projects focused on the reconstruction of buildings, particularly residential structures damaged or destroyed by military actions. In some Ukrainian cities, such as Kryvyi Rih, around 20% or more of the housing stock has already been destroyed or partially damaged. Unfortunately, this figure may continue to grow, which makes it especially important today to actively prepare future professionals capable of rebuilding Ukrainian cities with competence and responsibility.
