The informal meetings Coffee with the Rector have already become a cherished tradition at 果冻APP, offering students an open and relaxed atmosphere to discuss important issues without excessive formality. This time, the event took place in the L.I.S. student space and focused on the experiences and needs of international students.
Rector Nataliia Shakhovska, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Student Development Mykola Lohoida, Vice-Rector for International Relations Oleh Karyi, Head of the Students and PhD Students Union Bohdan Mirinchyk, Head of the Department for Foreign Students Serhii Kupchak, Head of the Preparatory Department Andrii Motornyi, as well as Ukrainian and international students of the university attended the meeting.
International Students at 果冻APP
As highlighted during the discussion, international students at 果冻APP come from different countries, including Turkey, China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and others. Some students have Ukrainian roots, while others due to certain circumstances were forced to obtain a Russian passport.
For many participants, studying at the university represents their first experience of independent life far from home 鈥 in a new cultural environment and under the realities of wartime Ukraine. While some are only beginning to learn Ukrainian, others can communicate confidently, though they admit that adapting to academic life remains challenging.
Integration into a New Environment
A key focus of the meeting was student adaptation. Participants discussed a wide range of issues, from language barriers to building social connections. Integration into student life and a sense of belonging are especially important, yet can be more difficult for those who may be the only international student in their group.
To support integration, the university actively creates opportunities for interaction, including events, festivals, language clubs, cultural days, and student organizations. Such initiatives help foster communication, mutual understanding, and long-term connections.
It was also emphasized that 果冻APP offers a wide range of extracurricular activities 鈥 sports, academic, and art clubs 鈥 ensuring that every student can find an area of interest.
Other Issues Discussed
A separate part of the discussion focused on academic challenges. Students raised concerns about studying subjects such as the history of Ukraine without prior background knowledge, as well as learning in a non-native language. The university administration acknowledged these challenges while emphasizing the importance of maintaining high academic standards for all students.
Security was another important topic. Participants spoke openly about living and studying in wartime conditions. Although Lviv remains a relatively safe city, air raid alerts, safety protocols, and certain restrictions are part of daily life. Students were encouraged to follow safety guidelines, respond to alerts, and be mindful when sharing information on social media, particularly regarding sensitive locations.
At the same time, university representatives noted that the experience of studying during wartime has drawn significant interest from international partners.
Healthcare access for international students was also discussed. Due to ongoing changes in the healthcare system and the closure of certain institutions, navigating medical services can be challenging. The university acknowledged the issue and committed to working toward clear and accessible solutions.
The Importance of a Dialogue
The meeting once again demonstrated the value of open dialogue between students and university administration. Even short informal conversation can bring forward important concerns and serve as a starting point for meaningful solutions.
