History of the Chemical Engineering Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering was founded in 1949. Its first chair was D. V. Savkevich, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Associate Professor. At that time, the department had six staff members. In 1955, O. I. Chernyavsky, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Associate Professor, took over as chair. Throughout this period, until 1977, the department trained engineers in the specialties “Machinery and Apparatus for Chemical Production” and “Equipment for Building Materials Enterprises.”

In 1968, G. A. Akselrud was the first to defend a doctoral dissertation at the department. That same year, he became head of the department and remained in this position until 1987. Subsequently, the department was led by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Y. M. Gumnytskyi. In 1991, enrollment began for the “Industrial Ecology and Environmental Protection” program, with 25 students admitted.

In 1992, the department was renamed “Chemical Engineering and Industrial Ecology.” To meet the needs of the chemical and building materials industries, enrollment in the mechanical engineering program “Equipment for Chemical Production and Building Materials” was resumed in 1993.

Since 2002, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Ecology has been divided into two: “Chemical Engineering,” headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Y.M. Hanik, and “Ecology and Environmental Protection.”

In 2007, the Department licensed a new academic program in “Chemical Engineering.”

From 2010 to 2026, the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering was Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.M. Atamanyuk.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies is currently accepting applications for the following degree programs:

AT THE “BACHELOR’S” LEVEL (FIRST LEVEL OF HIGHER EDUCATION):

F3 (122), G1 (161) “Computer-Aided Design of Chemical Technology Equipment”:
G1 (161) “Chemical Technologies and Engineering”:

AT THE “MASTER’S” LEVEL (SECOND LEVEL OF HIGHER EDUCATION):

G1 (161) Educational Program “Computer Chemical Engineering”:
G1 (161) Educational Program “Chemical Production Processes and Equipment”:

Since 2026, the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering is O.S. Ivashchuk, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Senior Researcher, Professor.

Since the early 1950s, faculty members and graduate students have defended over 100 master’s theses and 18 doctoral dissertations, published more than 800 scientific papers, and produced a number of manuals, textbooks, and methodological guidelines.
