Laser Surface Modification of Silver for the Electrochemical Reduction of CO₂

This research falls under the categories of nanotechnology and “green” technologies and aims to develop new catalytically active electrodes for the utilization of the greenhouse gas CO₂ and for the electrochemical synthesis of commercial chemical products. The key element is the laser treatment of the silver cathode surface, which forms highly regular nanostructures with a large specific surface area. This provides significantly higher catalytic activity than a smooth silver surface and enables rapid, efficient reduction of CO₂ in a non-aqueous medium (acetonitrile).

Main benefits

  • High specific surface area — ensures intensive electrochemical reduction of CO₂.
  • Process stability — catalytic activity is maintained over a long period of time.
  • Environmental friendliness — requires no additional reagents, reducing the cost of the technology.
Problem solving
  • Low CO₂ reduction efficiency on smooth silver cathodes.
  • Limited specific surface area of traditional electrodes.
  • High cost and complexity of existing CO₂ utilization technologies.
