From Washington to Lviv: ��APP to Host a Ukraine–U.S. Science and Education Forum

On June 11–12, 2026, ��APP will host the international event Lviv Academic Bridge 2026: Ukraine–U.S. Science & Education Forum. The event will take place in a hybrid format, bringing together representatives of universities, government institutions, research communities, civil society organizations, and the Ukrainian professional diaspora in the United States.

Co-organizers of the forum include the Science and Education Forum held as part of Ukrainian Week in Washington, the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies, and the Ukrainian Science Diaspora. Negotiations with additional partners are ongoing. The event will be held with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States of America.

The forum will continue discussions launched during Ukrainian Week in Washington — this time in Lviv, with a focus on partnerships, joint projects, and practical formats for collaboration. The initiative to hold the event came from Prof. Nataliya Shakhovska, Rector of ��APP. The forum is seen as the next step in advancing Ukraine–U.S. cooperation in science and education.

Symbolically, the event will take place in 2026 — the year of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America. In this context, the forum in Lviv takes on added significance as a platform for reflecting on shared values, academic freedom, partnership, and trust between Ukraine and the U.S.

The program includes several key segments: a strategic panel on developing Ukraine–U.S. partnerships amid global uncertainty; presentations by Ukrainian and Ukraine-oriented communities in the U.S.; a dedicated session with American universities; a pitch session for Ukrainian research and educational projects; and a discussion on the Ukraine–U.S. Open Knowledge Corridor — a future space for collaboration in open science, academic exchange, and scholarly communication.

Expected participants include representatives of government bodies, universities, international academic networks, expert communities, research centers, civic initiatives, and the Ukrainian academic diaspora in the United States.

An important part of the preparation for the forum will be an open call (details to be announced soon). Before the event, the organizers will publish a catalog of civic and professional initiatives in the U.S. that are open to cooperation with Ukraine, as well as a catalog of Ukrainian research and educational projects seeking support, partnership, or international development. Information can be submitted through dedicated Google Forms. This will make it possible to identify potential partners ahead of the forum, better map the landscape of cooperation, and make the event itself more productive. Both catalogs will be updated periodically.

Special attention during the forum will be given to friend-shoring in science — developing cooperation with institutions that are strategically trusted and with which long-term partnerships in research, innovation, and joint educational formats are possible. Another key topic is the creation of an open knowledge corridor between Ukraine and the U.S., grounded in clear rules, transparency, and mutual benefit.

For ��APP, the forum is part of a strategy to expand international partnerships, strengthen the university's role in the global academic landscape, and create new opportunities for Ukrainian researchers, faculty, and students.

The event will conclude with the Lviv Action Note — an agreed-upon document that will outline priority areas for Ukraine–U.S. cooperation in science and education and define the next practical steps. The forum in Lviv aims to be not only a continuation of an important conversation begun in Washington, but also a platform for new joint decisions.

The event takes place on April 28–30, 2026.

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is April 20, 2026.

Conference materials will be published in a collection of abstracts. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to a section of the collective monograph «Resilient Hospitality: Transformations of Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Business in Crisis Conditions».

All participants will receive certificates (15 hours, equivalent to 0.5 ECTS credits).

March 26–27, 2026, the XI International Youth Congress “Sustainable Development: Environmental Protection. Energy Efficiency. Balanced Use of Natural Resources” was held at ��APP. The event was organized by the Department of Ecology and Balanced Nature Management of the Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development.

The congress brought together 117 participants from 12 cities of Ukraine, as well as representatives from Georgia, Pakistan, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Students, PhD candidates, and pupils of general secondary and vocational education institutions took part in the event. As a result of the congress, 308 scientific contributions were included in the proceedings.

The discussions focused on current challenges in environmental protection, rational use of natural resources, and the implementation of sustainable development principles. The congress operated through four thematic seminars dedicated to air and water protection, sustainable development and balanced nature management, as well as the development of a circular bioeconomy.

The fourth thematic seminar, “Circular Bioeconomy,” was organized within the framework of the Horizon Europe project “Excellence Hub for Smart Agriculture and Circular Bioeconomy Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Sector in Widening Countries (and beyond)” (AGRI-BIOCIRCULAR-HUB, GAP 101186869). The project aims to foster innovative approaches in sustainable agricultural production and resource efficiency.

During the plenary session and thematic seminars, participants presented research addressing pressing environmental challenges and possible solutions. Young researchers actively discussed greenhouse gas emission reduction, energy efficiency, and the development of climate-neutral energy systems. Special attention was given to the implementation of circular bioeconomy principles, including waste recycling and resource reuse.

Participants also presented studies on monitoring air quality, water resources, and soils, as well as the use of modern Earth remote sensing technologies. Discussions covered biodiversity conservation, environmental safety of territorial communities, and the impact of climate change on natural and economic systems. Particular attention was paid to the development of the green economy, environmentally balanced land use, and sustainable tourism.

Young scientists highlighted innovative approaches to the bioremediation of contaminated areas, the use of alternative materials, and the development of environmentally oriented technologies across various sectors. Presentations emphasized the role of education, science, and public engagement in fostering environmental awareness and ensuring sustainable societal development.

A key highlight of the congress was the final stage of the hackathon “Ecological Rehabilitation of Soils,” which focused on strategies for restoring territories in Ukraine damaged by military actions. The participants’ reports demonstrated the complexity of the problem, extending beyond mechanical landscape damage. Expert analysis revealed a multidimensional nature of contamination—from chemical pollution caused by ammunition detonation products to large-scale fuel and lubricant leaks.

The practical discussion focused on technological solutions for land remediation. Participants proposed a structured algorithm of actions, including the application of modern adsorption methods, phyto- and bioremediation as low-carbon and highly effective approaches for immobilizing toxic substances in plant biomass or enabling their microbiological decomposition. The congress concluded that restoring soil fertility and ecological balance in Ukraine is only possible through a transition from localized measures to large-scale implementation of innovative technologies combined with natural self-purification mechanisms, requiring interdisciplinary collaboration among environmental, engineering-chemical, and biological sciences.

Within the congress, a round table discussion “Youth Perspective on the Synergy of Research and Technologies for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems” was also held as part of the Horizon Europe AGRI-BIOCIRCULAR-HUB project. The event served as a platform to discuss the role of young scientists in implementing innovative solutions, advancing circular bioeconomy, and strengthening cooperation between science, business, and society in transforming the agri-food sector.

The congress became an important platform for exchanging ideas, scientific achievements, and establishing international cooperation. As a result, participants outlined перспективні напрями further research and emphasized the importance of active youth involvement in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

From Science to Innovation: A Scientific Seminar of the LASER-PRO Project was Held at ��APP

On April 2, 2026, in auditorium 214 of the main academic building of ��APP, an open scientific seminar titled "Laser Technologies and Photonics in Ukraine: from Science to Innovation" was held. The event took place within the framework of the international project LASER-PRO (Excellent Laser Technologies for the Sustainable Prosperity of Europe), which is implemented with the support of the European Union's Horizon Europe program.

The ceremonial part of the seminar was opened by the Vice-Rector for International Relations Oleh Karyy. He emphasized the importance of developing high-tech industries in Ukraine and the role of international cooperation in strengthening the university's scientific potential. Anatoliy Andrushchak, the coordinator of the LASER-PRO project from ��APP and professor of the Department of Applied Physics and Nanomaterials (PFN), addressed the participants with introductory remarks. In addition, the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Iryna Yaremchuk was present at the event, which emphasized the importance of this scientific project for ��APP.

The speakers of the event presented a wide panorama of the laser industry's development – from fundamental research to the commercialization of developments:

Professor Maryan Kyryk (Department of ICT) delivered a presentation on the LASER-PRO project. He spoke in detail about the goals of the "Excellent Laser Technologies for the Sustainable Prosperity of Europe" initiative and its significance for the sustainable development of the European space.

Professor Ivan Demydov, Head of the Intellectual Property Protection and Technology Transfer Department, presented an analysis of the state of laser technologies in Ukraine as of 2025–2026, focusing on existing facilities and infrastructure.

Dr. Yaroslav Shchur (Institute for Condensed Matter Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) discussed the fascinating topic of "Scientific Innovations in Art". He demonstrated a unique example of applying Raman spectroscopy to the study of artworks and archaeological finds.

The Head of the Project Office of ��APP, Nazariy Andrushchak, spoke about grant opportunities for scientists and businesses. He presented the LASER-PRO Open Call competition, a program that provides financial support for companies implementing advanced laser innovations, with potential grants of up to 40,000 euros.

The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, as well as an introduction to the university's optical laboratories. Students, postgraduates, scientists, and business representatives had the opportunity to exchange experiences and find potential partners for future joint projects.

On April 3, 2026, ��APP hosts a roundtable discussion entitled «European Experience and Modern Realities of Consumer Rights Protection in Ukraine». The event takes place in room 214 of the University’s main building.

The roundtable is dedicated to World Consumer Rights Day and aims to foster a culture of conscious consumption, as well as to enhance awareness of consumer protection rights. These principles are a defining feature of a civilized market economy and a key prerequisite for Ukraine’s European integration.

The event will contribute to improving participants’ digital literacy and provide practical tools for protecting consumer rights, including in the digital environment. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how Ukraine’s legal framework for consumer protection is evolving under the influence of European standards. The involvement of practitioners will ensure a shift from theoretical discussion to applied analysis of real-world consumer protection practices.

Recently, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University (UJEP) in Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic) hosted Training No. 3 Circular Economy Application: By-products of Gasification and Pyrolysis as Amendments in Advanced Phytotechnology, organized within the framework of the NATO SPS MYP G6094 project Mitigation of climate change through advanced phytotechnology for military lands.

��APP was represented by Iryna Yaremchuk, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, along with researchers from the Department of Physical, Analytical and General Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies – Pavlo Shapoval, Vitalii Stadnik, and Martyn Sozanskyi.

The training focused on the exchange of expertise and discussion of research findings related to the physicochemical treatment of biomass waste and the valorization of biochar within Miscanthus × giganteus phytotechnology. The first session featured reports by leading international experts, including Professor Ondrej Masek (Head of the UK Biochar Research Centre, University of Edinburgh), Dr. Pavel Lestinsky (Institute of Environmental Technologies, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava), as well as representatives of academic institutions and research groups from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In total, the event brought together 55 participants, including researchers and end-users of phytotechnology.

The second session addressed the application of pyrolysis by-products, particularly biochar and ash, in advanced Miscanthus phytotechnologies. Participants discussed research outcomes from experimental sites in Chomutov (Czech Republic), Dolyna, and Vorzel (Ukraine).

The third session was dedicated to the assessment of biomass pyrolysis by-products, including biogas, bio-oil, and contaminated biochar. This session was led by Maria Marinova and Frank Zeman, representing the Royal Military College of Canada.

As part of the second segment of Training No. 3, representatives of the Faculty of Environment of UJEP, the NATO SPS MYP G6094 project and the ESURET project teams organized a joint Czech–Ukrainian scientific seminar dedicated to strengthening partnerships with Ukrainian higher education institutions, including ��APP, Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University, and the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. The seminar aimed to foster bilateral academic cooperation, promote knowledge exchange, enhance postgraduate training, and support the development of sustainable research partnerships.

On March 20, representatives of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (Germany) and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences joined the seminar. During the event, Vice-Rector Iryna Yaremchuk presented ��APP, highlighting its scientific potential and strategic development priorities.

The meeting was held in a constructive and collegial atmosphere. Participants identified promising areas for joint research, emphasizing opportunities for expanding international cooperation through initiatives such as Horizon Europe and COST, as well as through academic mobility and the exchange of postgraduate students and early-career researchers. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to strengthening and deepening collaboration with Ukrainian partners.

An open scientific seminar «Laser Technologies and Photonics in Ukraine: From Science to Innovation» will be held on April 2, 2026. The event will take place in auditorium 214 in the main academic building at ��APP.

The event is organized within the international project Excellent Laser Technologies for the Sustainable Prosperity of Europe (LASER-PRO), implemented with the support of the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. Its aim is to highlight the current development of laser technologies in Ukraine and explore emerging opportunities for scientists, engineers, and businesses.

Participants will hear presentations by leading researchers from ��APP and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, covering the current state of the laser industry in Ukraine; the application of Raman spectroscopy in the study of artworks and archaeological artifacts; and the LASER-PRO Open Call – a financial support program for companies in the field of laser innovations, offering grants of up to €40,000.

The seminar will be of particular interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students in physics, photonics, and engineering, as well as to academic staff, researchers, business representatives, and startups seeking technological partnerships or EU grant opportunities.

Admission is free, and no prior registration is required. The seminar begins at 15:00.

During a working visit to Kyiv, the Rector of ��APP, Nataliia Shakhovska, held a meeting with the Rector of the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine, Andrii Cherniak. The key outcome of the meeting was signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation.

During the discussions, the heads of the two leading higher education institutions explored prospective areas of collaboration, particularly in education, research, innovation, professional training of specialists, and the exchange of expertise. Rector Andrii Cherniak outlined the distinctive features of specialist training at his institution and highlighted its strategic development priorities. Particular attention was given to the establishment of a Cybersecurity Qualification Center, which is currently under development, as well as to the advancement of professional standards in this field. The parties also agreed to engage the Academy’s experts in the security-focused academic programs of ��APP and to explore opportunities for implementing joint international projects.

The signed Memorandum opens new opportunities for the joint implementation of educational and research initiatives, fosters inter-institutional cooperation, and strengthens ties between the academic community and institutions that play a crucial role in national security. As a next step, the development of a Cooperation Roadmap is envisaged to define priority areas and concrete measures for collaboration in educational, research, and social spheres.

Notably, on the same day, the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine hosted a cultural evening featuring distinguished People’s Artists of Ukraine and recipients of the Order of Merit – Nataliia Sumska and Anatolii Khostikoiev.

Public lecture by Professor Ladislav Cabada (Czech Republic) within the framework of the EU_LEAD Project Oleksandr Levchenko Wed, 04/01/2026 - 12:50

On April 2, 2026, a public lecture by Professor Ladislav Cabada will be held within the project «EU Global Responsible Leadership: Climate Change, Environmental Protection and Humanitarian Aid» (EU_LEAD), supported by the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet programme.

Professor Cabada, a scholar at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, has extensive international academic experience, having completed research and teaching fellowships in Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Hungary. He is a co-founder of the international journal Politics in Central Europe (Scopus), which he led as Editor-in-Chief until 2023. He has also served as President of the Czech Political Science Association (2006–2012), President of the Central European Political Science Association (CEPSA, 2012–2018), and currently heads the Executive Committee of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).

His research focuses on comparative politics in Central and Eastern Europe, with particular attention to political systems, actors, electoral cycles, and political culture. He is the author and co-author of over 20 books and 150 scholarly publications in comparative political science.

The lecture will be held online in English.
